Hi everyone! I'm going to talk about Symmetry, Reflections and Inverses from our second unit; Transformation.

  • REFLECTIONS
* when your x value is negative reflect it on your y axis.
* make x-values negative

* when your y value is negative reflect it on your x axis
* make y-values negative

  • INVERSE FUNCTION
f(x)=2x+2

Replace f(x) with y                                                          Switch x and y

 y=2x+2                                                                          (1.4) - (4,1)
                                                                                        (0.2) - (2,0)
                                                                                        (-1,0) - (0,-1)

Solve for y                                                                     Replace y with f-1(x)

y=2x+2                                                                         f-1(x)= x-2/ 2
x=2y+2
y=x-2/2

Mirror Line = y=x
2/1 rise/run

  • SYMMETRY

* A function f(x) is even if for any value "x" f(-x)=f(x) or -f(-x)=-f(x). This function is symmetric about the y-axis.

* A function is odd if for any value "x" f(-x)=-f(x) or f(x)=-f(-x). This function is symmetric about the origin.

Determining if a shape is a function:

VLT(vertical line test) - crosses through the graph only once is a function. Crosses more than once not a function.

HLT(horizontal line test) - crosses through the graph one once has already passed the VLT then it is a one-to-one function.
